Safe, accessible living at home
As a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist, I offer consulting on how to make your home more accessible for people with changes in ability due to aging, injury, or illness
About Nested for Life
Over the course of our lives, nearly all of us will experience temporary or long-term changes in ability. When that happens, we often discover that our familiar home environment presents unexpected obstacles and hazards.
Fortunately, there are simple, low-cost modifications that can make your home easier to navigate. Not only can these improvements help you stay in your home and community as you get older—they also make your home more accessible for family and friends.
Services
I visit your home and talk with you to understand your current and future needs, then recommend attractive, cost-appropriate, low-maintenance modifications to the furnishings and layout of your home.
I can help with identifying design requirements, recommending specific fixtures and accessories, and offering referrals to contractors and interior designers with expertise in accessible design.
How We Work
We'll start with a phone conversation to get an idea of your needs and concerns.
Then we'll schedule one or more in-person visits to discuss your short and long term needs. During the visit, your family, friends, or caregivers are welcome to join us.
The cost for a basic consultation is $150, based on one phone consultation and one home visit of up to 1.5 hours total. Additional hours of consulting are available at $50/hour.
After the visit, you will receive a set of clear, actionable recommendations, along with a list of resources to use in making modifications to your home.
About Nan
About 15 years ago, I started having trouble with walking and balance. It took two years to determine my diagnosis: a rare progressive peripheral neuropathy. As my walking and balance became more troublesome, I realized that I would need to do some modifications to be able to stay in my home.
While I’ve had great care from doctors, nurses, orthotic specialists, and physical therapists, I couldn’t find anyone to help with design modifications. I did a lot of homework and developed my own plans for modifications, mostly to my bathroom. Eventually I needed to move to a one-level house, and again I could not find anyone to suggest appropriate modifications.
In 2016, I became a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist. I live outside of Oregon City and work in the greater Portland area. I love whitewater rafting, horseback riding, knitting, and watercolor painting.
About the heron
The fluid and graceful nature of the heron symbolizes going with the flow. The heron stands strong on its long legs, offering the gift of balance and self-reliance. The heron carries the message that we cannot always do everything by ourselves. We must be open to change as necessary. If one way doesn’t work, then another way will.
